This 19th century, four-story, 80,000 SF historic building was renovated into 21st-century humanity and intellectual center with a new seminar and group room, a new rotunda entrance from the main lobby, a café, and commons, improved building navigation, new HVAC and lighting systems, code upgrades and the latest information technology.

The library previously had steam heat with residential-style window air conditioners. Our challenge was to preserve the building’s historic nature while providing the environmental control and comfort of a new structure. To accomplish this, conventional HVAC systems were not designed; instead, a system of terminal fan coil units with ducted fresh air was designed.

The comfort control systems were integrated into the building’s existing architectural features. The fire protection design included a detailed piping layout to conceal sprinkler pipes so as not to interfere with the architectural features of the buildings.

Windward provided MEP engineering services as well as fire protection, telecommunication, and lighting design.
