Windward provided multi-disciplinary engineering design services for America on Wheels (AOW)-A Museum of Over the Road Transportation. The project included expansion of the 100,000 SF former Lehigh Valley Transit Company building that was built in 1907 as a power generating station for one of America’s largest regional trolley systems. The AOW is a museum within the renovated facility. The primary objective was to increase public knowledge of the technological processes utilized in the development of over-the-road transportation, from a historical and cultural context. There is an extensive collection of transportation-related artifacts, exhibits, and displays. To protect these exhibits, staff and guests, Windward designed an integrated building security system that includes access control, intrusion detection, glass break detection, exhibit protection, panic/duress stations, internal and external CCTV surveillance and analog recording.

Windward’s design services included structural engineering for all foundations and structural steel, plus mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering for all building systems. The design included all new HVAC systems, electrical power, lighting, telephone/data, security, and fire protection systems.
